This, along with The Spear, are books that have been nominated for sci-fi book awards this year. The Mountain and the Sea is a really strong book, with big ideas and big themes, but at the same time keepin the stage of the story small. While one character copes with guilt about past decisions, another is trying to figure out what they are. The settings vary from an island, to someone's apartment, to a fishing boat. But they all feel unique and really well realized in the book.
